Personal Yoga Journey
When did you start practicing yoga?

I started practicing yoga in 2000 after an injury.  I could still enjoy physical action & movement without aggravation of the body.

How long were you a student before you decided to become a teacher?  I practiced 4 years before teaching 1 class a week, then my students became my best teachers.

What made you want to become a teacher and how did you know that you were ready to be a teacher?
I wanted to become a teacher so I could continue learning.  I probably wasn't ready when I first started.

What are your personal inspirations/sources behind your teachings? (Besides family/life)
I am inspired by listening to the stories of others.

Who are you currently studying? What are focusing on in your current practice?
Currently I'm focusing on creating the opportunity to regularly practice physically.  Spiritually I'm working to stay mindful in each moment of each day rather than plan for the next experience before it has happened.

How do you take your yoga practice off the mat?
I am working to understand life's transitions and allowing the joy of parenthood to expand my personal growth.  I strive to be an observer of myself and others rather than being caught in the emotion.

What are some of your favorite yoga poses and why?
My favorite yoga poses to personally practice are headstand, wheel, and half moon, accentuating physical expansion.  My favorite yoga poses to teach are those that balance strength and relaxation such as building slowly to stronger poses and concluding with restorative poses and/or partner poses.

Books & Music
What are you reading now?

"Operating Instructions" Anne Lamot

"To Kill A Mockingbird" Harper Lee (promotes tolerance, empathy, and the becoming of an adult)
Guilty yoga pleasure: "Eat, Pray, Love" Elizabeth Gilbert
Daily read to my child: anything by Dr. Seuss (if you don't recall that they're yogic, reread "Oh the Places You'll Go" and "Horton Hears a Who"

What songs are on your current playlist?
Om Namo Bhavagate, Deva Premal
Sky Kisses Earth, Prem Joshua
Happy Ever After, Julia Fordham
Save Some Time to Dream, John Mellencamp
Mountain Hare Krishna, Krishna Das
Still, Wade Imre Morissette
Shine, Joni Mitchell

What are some songs/artists that you consistently play in your classes?
Deva Premal, Steve Ross, Wah, Krishna Das, Shantala, Wade Imre Morissette, Donna De Lory, Annie Lenox, The Wailin' Jennys, The Beatles, NPR shorts

Why (or why not) do you play music in your classes?
I search for inspiration and/or meaning in the words and/or melody of songs.  I love to sing while teaching class if a song moves me.

Advice to Students
What advice would you give your students just beginning yoga?
Have patience with the newness of physical postures, they'll become more enjoyable for you through regular practice.  Be open to more than just the physical aspects of yoga in the future.  You'll receive more when you're ready.

What are you yoga must haves? (from items to moments—what do you need to have in your yogic life?)
