Buddhastatue2.jpgOUR BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY

Conscious Consumerism
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, composed around 200 CE and still considered the most succinct statement of yoga philosophy ever written, describes yoga as a path with eight limbs, of which asana is only one. The first two limbs, the yamas (moral restraints) and niyamas (observances), together lay out a set of 10 valued principles that Patanjali and virtually every yoga master after him say are crucial to one’s progress along the yogic path.

In our constant effort to bring our yoga off the mat and into our everyday lives, our team is inspired every day to bring our yoga practice into our business decisions and to also contribute to creating a more conscious consumer by sharing some of the ways in which we view this conscious evolution in our day to day business. We trust our students are interested in this same path and want to be a more conscious consumer.

Self Sign-In System
Since our teachers are partially paid based on attendance, please be mindful and remember to print your name clearly so that your teacher gets credit for you in his/her class.

Our self sign-in system reflects our effort to not only make checking in for class a bit smoother for our students, but it is also our effort to be trusting of our students to do their part in practicing Asteya, or practicing honesty and conscientiousness by remembering to sign into class. This ensures us that you are conscious about wanting to take care of all the people involved who work to ensure you have a great class.

Customer Service
The policies we have in place for the studio are to maintain a sense of fairness and kindness to all involved including our students and all the people who rely on the studio for a source of income. Please be mindful and considerate to the business as a whole when asking for an exception to a policy, extension to a pass, and share in our efforts to practice Ahimsa, or non-harming towards ourselves and others. The root of Ahimsa is that any violence is caused by separation. As soon as we think that we’re independent and that what we do is not going to affect others, we’ve performed a harmful act. We can never be perfect and we’ll never know exactly how everything we’re consuming affects everyone along the chain, but being mindful of this chain is the first step in recognizing the impact we have on others through our consumption.

Sharing Class Space
Capacity for the large room is between 48 and 60 (depending on the teachers request) and the small room is between 6 and 12, so if someone is trying to come into class (and it has not started yet!) please practice Aparigraha, the yama of non-hoarding and non-attachment and make room for your fellow yogis. When planning our space, our architects measured the rooms and the size of a standard yoga mat, and using a CAD computer system, told us we could have mats closer together and maximize attendance at 75 in the big room and 15 in the small room, but in our efforts to practice Aparigraha, we have lowered these numbers and will never overfill our yoga classes.

Cork Studio Floor
We chose cork imported from Portugal for many reasons. Many chiropractors and other health practitioners know cork as a flooring alternative for those with low back pain (think Birkenstock-floor!). It is comfortable and healthy to stand on. Also, because it is harvested from the exterior of a living tree, cork contains natural anti-microbes that prevent bacteria from entering the floor. From an environmental perspective, cork is a sustainable product as cork trees continue living and producing after the product is harvested. Their protection is highly legislated in Portugal, allowing some trees to live well past a century.

Our “floating” cork planks are very thick and there are no adhesives to the sub floor that wentinto installing it. (Most studios & gyms simply glue down tiles onto cement sub floors) Not only does this floating installation protect the air we breathe and any off gassing of glues, but it means our floor is shock absorbing, providing a cushion hovering above the sub floor and therefore ultimate floor for jumping styles of yoga such as Vinyasa Flow.  Jumbacks and occasional tumbles out of headstand are no longer a big deal.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
We use all natural, chemical free products for the entire studio cleaning. The products are hypo-allergenic (contain no perfumes, dyes, formaldehyde preservatives, ammonia or other common allergens). They are plant based and thus can biodegrade very efficiently.

Low VOC Paints
Most paints contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which once in the atmosphere, react with other chemicals to form ozone, a major component of pollution. We chose Lifemaster 2000 “VOC free” brand, which hospitals and nursing homes use for the best air quality. For our yoga rooms, only trace elements of VOCs are added in form of colorants to the Lifemaster 2000 base. Since much of a yoga class is focused on breathing, this choice is optimal from a health perspective.

Our Non-porous Mats & Natural Mat Disinfectant
We only sell and rent non porous yoga mats for your safety and comfort. (Manduka & Prana) To keep the rental mats clean, we use a blend of chemical free plant based disinfectants including essential oils such as Thyme, Tea Tree Oil or Peppermint. These naturally accelerate the germ-killing processes within plants, similar to our immune system. We also provide a spray bottle of this blend in our studio for cleaning your own mat.
